Painting my nails has always been a relaxing past time. When the chores are done and you finally have an hour to yourself, painting your nails can be really relaxing. What’s not to love? You get a pretty result and nail polish that lasts ages, right? Not for most of us. We all know the struggles of trying to dry our nails as quickly as possible, all whilst making sure we’re careful not to chip our hard work over the next 2-3 days. I’d seen gel polish kits floating about online and couldn’t resist the idea of long-lasting, professional looking nails.
So as my 20th birthday is fast approaching, my mum let me choose a gift (and have it early!) and I chose the Mylee Gel Polish LED Kit. I heard Sophie (from sophdoesnails) on Youtube mention it and thought I’d check it out – her nails always look amazing! Watch her chat about it here. This kit retails for £70 and includes: the LED Salon Series Lamp, 1 top coat, 1 base coat, 4 x Mygel polishes, 1 pack of 200 Mylee lint free wipes, 1 bottle of prep+polish and 1 bottle of gel remover. I think this a super good deal – think of all the money you’ll save in the long run! So onto the review…
The first time I used the kit, I don’t think I cured my nails very well and my nails turned out bubbly and peeled off – which I know is not the fault of the machine, because I have since re-done my nails and had no issues. As a beginner with gel nails, I did find the kit a bit daunting at first. However after a read of the instructions I felt good to go.
The steps to completing your nails are as follow:
- Prep nails using the prep + polish on top of a lint free wipe.
- Apply a thin layer of base coat, cure nails under the lamp for 30 seconds
- Apply a thin layer of your chosen gel colour. Cure for 30 seconds.
- Repeat step 3 one or two more time to build your layers gradually.
- Apply a layer of top coat, but this time cure your nails for 60 seconds.
- There will now be a tacky layer on top of your nails, use some prep + polish on top of a lint wipe again to rub this layer away.
- Now apply cuticle oil if you have some.
I’ve definitely noticed a big difference between painting my nails with standard polish and using gel polish with a lamp. After a few days wear, I have no chips or loss of shine despite being quite rough with my hands doing chores etc. I think a lamp like this is the perfect remedy if you want quick, but clean nails. Plus it feels like you’re at a home salon, for a fraction of the price! The one thing I’m looking forward to is painting my nails for going on holiday – it cuts the worry of your nails chipping on day 1 and having no remover or other polish to redo your nails.
The individual colour polishes from the Mylee website cost £5.50 which scares me when I’d now like to stock up on lots of different colours. I’m going to see if other (cheaper) brands of gel polish work with lamp and base + top coats. I don’t see why it wouldn’t because the LED light technically does all of the work – but I will update this post when I find out.
I don’t think I’ve done a review on my blog yet, but I’m really glad this was my first! I hope you enjoyed this post and if you know of any good gel polish brands, please let me know!
Until next time,
