2020 Come And Get Me

Another year ends and another one begins, nice to meet you 2020! I think a lot of us can agree that 2019 was over before it started, it’s felt like one of the quickest years of my life. It’s funny to think that I’m only 20 years old but this is my 3rd decade, and I’m loving every minute of it. I really do have a lust for life and a passion for creating the most fulfilling life I can for myself.

I have so many memories stored up and 2019 has definitely added to the collection. Back at the start of 2019, I wrote a post all about my goals for the year and continued to write “monthly reviews” so I could keep track ready for this exact post you’re reading now! I’m going to see what goals I achieved and what I’m aiming to achieve in 2020.

I wanted to make sure that my 2019 goals weren’t completely unachievable, or far enough out of my reach that I’d lose motivation. Personally, I prefer to set small milestones for myself as well as something big. Every ounce of effort you make counts for something – it doesn’t have to be world-changing. So what did I actually achieve?

Adopt a more cruelty-free lifestyle: I made a choice to cut out dairy milk unless I was away from home or there was no alternative, so I’ve been drinking soya milk for around 2.5 years now and still going. I’ve switched out my skincare routine to make sure it’s mostly vegan and/or cruelty-free. I’ve not done so good on the makeup front, but small changes still matter.

Move out: I did! I moved in with my boyfriend from January – December in a town not too far from home. We shared with 2 of his friends and it was rocky at times, but the best learning curve I could have given myself. I started a new job, juggled bills for the first time, did the food shop and learnt to live independently. I am glad to be back home (Lewis is with me too) so we can start properly saving ready for our own adventure.

Get my drivers licence: This is still a bit of a fresh wound at the moment. I did around 10 hours of lessons before I moved out, so made sure to pick it up again as soon as I could afford it. I had so many more lessons, but still ended up failing 3 tests. I did save and brought my own first car, which I can drive with mum or dad, and I think I do it pretty well, I just think the actual test sucks major balls.

Settle in a job: Haha, one day. Obviously whilst living away, I worked 11 months in a position that I grew to be quite good at, but had to leave due to the change in our living situation. A few days after moving back home, I managed to secure a position with a slightly higher wage than what I was on, so I’ll be able to pay rent at home but also save comfortably.

Hit 1k on insta: This was the only number related goal I had, and I managed to hit it! Unfortunately, I think Instagram is super hard to grow on, but a perfect grid just isn’t me. I like keeping it homely and real.

Learn to braid my hair: I am actually quite shocked with myself that I didn’t even attempt to learn once. Some people do it so effortlessly and make it look so easy! I’ll definitely have to dust the Youtube tutorials off and give it a go.

Say yes more and stop being scared: I’d say this was aimed more at my social life, as I’ve come to learn I’m quite the introvert, just by comparing myself to those around me. I can socialise for a few hours or a day, but after that, I need my own time to recharge and be by myself. I wouldn’t say I was shy, I’ve been told in interviews and by driving instructors that I come across confident – which I was shocked about. In the summer, I travelled to London by myself for the first time to meet Millie from MSB Life and it was SUCH a good day and I can’t wait to see her again. I helped at a few of my mum’s Zumba events and went bowling with some colleagues from work at the weekend. They may sound like such basic things, but a few years ago I would have said no and stayed in my comfort zone. I really don’t have many friends at all, but I want to cherish those I do have.

Travel to a new country: For my 20th birthday in June, my boyfriend and I flew to Alcudia in Spain for a few days relaxation and it was bliss. We’d both visited Spain before, but we also booked a trip to Auschwitz in Poland for March 2020 and South Korea in May 2020. I’ve been to Korea before but I have been so desperate to visit again and show someone what it has to offer.

Gain regular blog traffic and make more friends in the community: A few of my blog posts consistently do quite well and have even hit the first page of Google which is really exciting, but I must admit blogging had to take a back seat a few times throughout the year. I didn’t realise how time-consuming it could be, and I simply just didn’t have that much spare time, energy or motivation throughout the year on top of working full time and housework etc. I’m hoping I’ll feel better now I’m back at home.

Do more for charity: I still donate Β£2 a month to Wateraid, but I didn’t really achieve this goal in 2019. I’m going to make more of an effort in 2020, but need a clear plan of what I’d like to support.

So what are my goals for 2020?

1. Pass my driving test – I was so close to giving up, but also so close to passing. I will hold that blue certificate one day.

2. Begin mortgage savings – I have my budget set and a goal in mind, so I’m going to do my best.

3. Live each day like it’s my last – It sounds so cheesy and cliche, but tomorrow is never guaranteed. Grab each day and do what sets your soul on fire. It’s also so important to be kind and never go to bed on an argument.

4. Become fitter and healthier – I’m not going to be a gym bunny drinking protein shakes, but I get out of breath going up the stairs sometimes so I need to incorporate some exercise into my life. I’m keen to bike and swim more but enjoy the fitness journey so it’s not a chore.

5. Learn a new skill – I’m not too sure where I’m going with this one yet, but I feel so inspired by so many people that can play an instrument, make art, speak another language, that I want to find what there is out there for me.

I’d love to hear how your 2019 went down below and where you’re headed in 2020. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope the last few weeks have treated you well and that 2020 treats you even better. Happy New Year!

Until next time,

Emily x
